HTC Desire is packed with all those features a perfect mobile phone must have. This phone can be called as the all-rounder phone that is capable of performing all the tasks a smartphone must do. HTC Desire is designed and packed well to give the user all the attractive features.

Highlight features

Some of the highlight features of this mobile phone are virtual keyboard, better usage of social networking, high resolution touch screen, 1GHz Snapdragon processor and fast web browser with the support of Flash. Users can pinch to zoom any image or text on the screen. Surfing through the internet in this mobile phone gives the user a unique experience.

Appearance

HTC Desire comes with the dark grey plastic cover. It comes with touch sensitive trackpad that is placed on the right place. The size of the screen is large enough for the user to work on the internet, emails, messages and social networking sites. Top half of the device is covered with the metal frame and the spaces surrounding the sides and bottom controls are rubberised. The rubberised finish of the phone gives the user a secure feeling and the matte finish does not form finger prints on it. This mobile phone is lengthy but thin and thus can be easily carried inside a pocket. It is designed to have smooth curves thus making conversation easy. The bottom of the Desire comes with normal controls such as home button, menu button, back and search buttons. There is also a central optical button. Though the optical button is more realistic, you will hardly use it.

Normal volume control buttons are seen on the left side of the Desire and a 3.5mm jack and power/ standby button can be seen on the top of the mobile phone. There is a provision for the standard Micro-USB connection to charge the mobile phone or for any wired syncing. There is a 5MP camera, an external speaker grill and LED flash. One can find the microSD card slot that can support 32GB card and provides memory expansion over 576MB internal.

One can also find for a large display clock and the screen changes according to the weather conditions. If the weather is sunny, then the screen shines, if it is rainy the windscreen wiper clears the water drops and if the climate is foggy the screen changes cloudy.

Screen

The screen size is 3.7 inches and the resolution of the screen is 480x800-pixel. The AMOLED capacitive touch screen is very responsive.

Camera

The 5MP camera in this mobile phone comes with a resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels. According to Cnet UK, the camera of this mobile phone is not supportive for moving shots as there is lapse between pressing the button and the shot. But it takes good shots in daylight and the LED Flash light supports indoor shots. Autofocus is another feature of the camera in this mobile phone.

Keyboard

The QWERTY keyboard is large enough for the user to type messages and it is designed with the smart suggestions that correct the mistakes brilliantly. Portrait keyboard can be rotated to landscape form also according to the need of the user.

Entertainment

You can still work on some of the control even when the mobile phone is locked. You can press the top button to wake up the screen and change the volume of the music. You can also pause the music without unlocking the screen. You can enjoy to the FM radio too.

Dimension and weight

The dimension of this mobile phone is 60mm x 119mm x 11.9mm and weighs 135 grams.

Battery

The stand by and talk time of 2G is upto 340 hours and upto 6 hours 40 minutes respectively. The stand by and talk time of 3G is upto 360 hours and upto 6 hours 30 minutes respectively.

Blackberry Bold is the first mobile from the RIM to have version 6 operating system. The phone has a sliding keyboard and relies heavily on the touch pad. The 9780 is identical to the earlier blackberry phones except for a tiny leather pattern on the back.

A wonderful Keypad

Keeping up the reputation of the Blackberry series of mobile phones, the Bold is not a monk when it comes to typing. This phone will tell you why people prefer the Blackberry when it comes to typing emails. The keys being soft are spacious enough to allow most fat fingers.

Camera

The 5-megapixel camera of the device is said to be unexpectedly brilliant overtaking all its predecessors. It is said to produce good quality shots and has impressive features too. On the other hand its video capturing ability is not so good with its 720p-capture bandwagon.

Performance

The doubled RAM capacity of the mobile (512 MB) does all the functions very quickly for the mobile even though the CPU is just 624MHz which is quite low when compared to a low-level android mobile phone. Overall the speed and performance is expected to be good and so this aspect of the phone seems to be safe.

Usability

All the functions of the mobile is entirely dependent on the capacitive touchpad which is pretty sensitive and performs very well. The universal search tool allow you to explore just about anything on your phone and the function is available with a single call on your home screen.

There seems to be no replacing the blackberry when it comes to email management. The Bold does nothing wrong to spoil the reputations of blackberry. Browsing the web is also improved and rapid comparing to its predecessors. The addition of Facebook and Twitter is a warm welcome.

Unfriendly Web Browsing

Thinking of working around with a physical keyboard and the touch pads, leaving the luxury of the touch screens, is a bit too queer. Navigating, zooming and other artful and realistic features of a touch screen device is all missing in these brand of mobiles. However connectivity is never an issue as the 9780 features a Wifi and 3G. The battery life isn't the worst either with its ability to be active comfortably for two days. May be, the small 2.4 inch screen and its capacity of 480x360-pixel contributes to the long life of the battery.

To sum up, the blackberry bold 9780 isn't a bad phone by any standards. Its email capabilities and finger-friendly keypad make up to its short fall to a typical touch screen device when browsing.

Disney Mobile launches two new Android smartphones, namely DM011SH and DM010SH.
The DM011SH features a 4-inch 3D capable qHD touchscreen display with 960 x 540 resolution, an 8-megapixel camera, and a 1GHz processor. Meanwhile, the DM010SH has a slider form that is waterproof. The phone features a 3.4-inch touchscreen with 854 x 480 resolution, and the same camera and processor details like its higher-end counterpart.

Both smartphones run on Android 2.3 and are designed with familiar Disney insignia in eye-catching colors like pink and white. If you are not into the candy colors, the DM010SH also comes in black (pictured).
The DM010SH is expected to hit Japan in October, while the DM011SH should appear on Japanese retail by December.

There's a lot to fall for in Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1. Possibly the hottest looker of a PocketPC is also heavy on skill. Heavy enough to not just scratch out a living as a one-hit-wonder but aim for the WinMo top.

The extra solid metal looks, gorgeous screen and the right pinch of novelty called XPERIA panels look to us as good enough reasons for the X1 to be hyped and romanticized. By the way, romance or not, Sony Ericsson and HTC have hit their perfect shape with that one.

The XPERIA X1 is surely the most eagerly anticipated device in the world of Windows Mobile. Getting our review out was surely quite a wait too, we know. Better late than ever, as some folks say. We'll still have our say 'cause for the XPERIA it's a load of high expectations to live up to.

The XPERIA X1 is one of the best-equipped Windows Mobile devices to ever set foot on the market. But hey, is it not the most elaborate and charismatic PocketPC too? As to skills, the high-res 3" screen and the full QWERTY keyboard seem the most important parts of its magnificent ammo though its processing power is not to be neglected either.

Many devices find their identity in standing up to a rival. The XPERIA though is fatefully bound to always have one foot on alien ground. The haunting name for the X1 is HTC - manufacturer and main competitor.

As you probably guessed by yourselves the main alternative to the XPERIA X1 is HTC Touch Pro. It has a smaller screen than the XPERIA X1 and features a slightly lower resolution. In addition it is heavier and, if we were to be asked, not nearly as hot as the XPERIA.

However, the QWERTY keyboard of the Touch Pro is well ahead of what the X1 has to offer. The Touch Pro accelerometer and active magnetic stylus are small but nice touches that add to its allure. There are other advantages too, but we'll try to list them in the dedicated chapter of this review.

Furthermore, the Touch Pro had a nice two-month advantage since it hit the shelves back in August and this could be quite decisive for the sales. After all two months is quite a long time in the world of mobile phones, isn't it?

Let's not waste any more time now and get rolling with the actual review of Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1. Unboxing is this little jump ahead.

The LG KC910

The LG KC910 has a moniker that sends out a bold and clear statement about talent. Packing a whopping 8 megapixel camera and top-of-the-line video recording, the LG KC910 Renoir is all about capturing the moment, leaving an impression. While this alone should be enough to assert an identity, the Renoir just won't stop there. With the full touch user interface and the portly 3" display, everything is a mere touch away. Wi-Fi, HSDPA and GPS are all aboard to add the last bits of oomph to the feature-loaded LG Renoir.

The exciting facts and figures from the Renoir specs sheet however won't really give away its real-life performance and this is where we step in. We already had the camera performance of the LG Renoir to bits in our 8 megapixel cameraphone shootout but it's time to move up and look at the bigger picture.

It certainly took us quite some time to bring this review forward. Perhaps we even pushed it over the peak of your anticipation, but we didn't mean to get you starved so you like the meal better.

Our better-late-than-never department - duly sent to the corner, by the way - has finally prepared a full-featured, action-packed and hopefully eye-opening review of one of the best imaging mobile phones this year - the LG KC910 Renoir.

LG Renoir is among the few 8 megapixel cameraphones that are already on the market and chances are you have been eyeing it big time for this year's holiday shopping - especially if you are into big touchscreens.

It builds on the Viewty popularity but does walk its own path, adding a number of innovations to the equation. The feel and overall experience is different - and better - with LG Renoir.

We guess we're looking at one of the most obvious rivalries in the game. The main competitor of the Renoir full-featured multimedia package is no other than Samsung Pixon. Both share the touchscreen form factor and will probably appeal to the same kind of users.

Choosing between them is a tough call. The Pixon has more camera-centric looks and is certainly a match for the Renoir imaging skill. Both have similar price tags and, while the Pixon lacks Wi-Fi connectivity, it makes up some with slightly bigger screen estate, better widgets, WVGA video recording and quad-band GSM support (which most Renoirs on the market reportedly lack).

Nokia N79

The nice looking Petrol Black version of Nokia N79 appeared today on the Nokia UK store web page. It's available in a so-called Nokia N79 Eco pack. What makes it “Eco” is the lack of a charger. While that sounds like a strange lind of eco-friendly initiative, it actually isn't.

When there's no charger in the box the package can be much smaller. That means less paper and water wasted, fewer trucks for all Nokia products to be delivered worldwide needed and millions of euro saved (of course there's an economical side of the ecology). Plus re-using your older Nokia charger, saves some recycling expenses.

Nokia stated that in nearly two years they have sold 250 million phones in small packages (all lower to midrange ones) and saved 15 000 tones of packaging material, 100 000 cubic meters of water and avoided 5000 truck journeys as more phones fitted in each truck.

In fact, there's something else and it is important, too. The sum of 4 GBP (around 4.5 euro or 6 USD) of the 319 GBP paid for every Nokia N79 Eco will be donated to the WWF.

The price of the eco-friendly N79 is not much different from that of the regular Nokia N79, but the extra cool Petrol Black color is pretty much worth it by our books plus there's a nice eco campaign involved. Who needs another charger anyway?

Sony Ericsson K770

Sony Ericsson announced the latest addition to its Cyber-shot family of cameraphones, the new K770. Like the other Cyber-shot cameraphones, the K770 makes use of an auto-focus lens system to make sure that photos come out crisp and clean. In fact, the company claims that prints of up to A4 (roughly 8.5" x 11") in size can be made from the K770's photos. Considering its auto-focus lens system, the K770 is still reasonably thin in profile, measuring about 14.5mm (.57").

One of the more user friendly aspects of K770's camera is how it makes use of a set of backlighted icons on the numeric keypad to show users which keys work as shortcuts to which functions, saving users the hassle of navigating through the camera's menu system. Activating the camera itself is also easy: just slide the lens' protective cover out of the way.

In addition to its photo and video capabilities, the K770 also offers something to music lovers. Bluetooth stereo support means that music can be enjoyed without wires, and a built-in RDS capable FM radio means that you don't always have to rely on tracks stored on the phones Memory Stick Micro (M2) card, even though a 256MB card ships with the device.

Other features of note include a 262k color, 1.9" QVGA display, a bright LED photo assist light, a USB mass storage mode, and tri-band GSM as well as 2100MHz UMTS 3G support for Europe.

The Sony Ericsson K770 will be available in select markets in Q4 of this year. No information on pricing was provided.

LG presents 3 new LCD TV's, a 37, a 42 and a 47". Let's focus on the 47" (a self-respecting geek always goes for at least 47"... ok, I admit, I was foolish to buy a 37"). This 47LB1DR is Full HD (1920x1080), it has a 5000:1 ratio and a refresh time of 6ms and last but not least a 250GB HDD to record TV broadcasts. These TV's should be out just in time for the Soccer World Cup (if that's your thing anyway).

Griffin iPod RoadTrip

Unlike a lot of blogging techno-geeks, I don't spend a lot of time writing about my latest gadgets, mainly because I don't buy a lot of gadgets. I have gotten a little crazy about the cameras lately, but so far I haven't had a lot to say about them other than a casual comment along with some of the pictures. About the only other gadget that has seduced me (and possibly broken my heart) recently is the iPod RoadTrip adapter from Griffin Technology.

For some reason, I bought an iPod last year. I'm still not sure why; maybe a subconscious urge to fit in on a college campus. For a while, I ended up using it more as a data storage/transfer device than as a music player. At that rate, it was a pretty expensive 20GB hard drive (although the portability was cool).

Eventually I decided I could get more use out of it if I could use it in the car, since I usually do like to have tunes playing while driving. The iPod could free me forever from the task of burning CDs. I didn't really want to hassle with the headphones, so I decided I needed an interface to the car stereo.

Since the stereo doesn't have a line input, I would need either a cassete adapter or an FM transmitter, both of which are available for the iPod from various companies. A friend suggested that the cassette adapter might provide better quality, but I thought the difference probably wouldn't be noticeable in a car interior, and that wireless was obviously the way to go.

In addition to getting the tunes from the iPod to the stereo, I would need a power adapter to keep it charged, and ideally a docking bracket of some sort to hold it. And then I stumbled on the all-in-one solution, the Griffin RoadTrip, which would plug into the cigarette lighter, hold the iPod, and transmit via FM to the stereo. Way cool!

Before purchase, I was a little leery about how it would really fit in my Celica, considering the location of the cigarette lighter. But the marketing info assured me that the included extension adapter would take care of any such problems. So I ordered it.

A lot of other people must have been as impressed with this as I was, because it was on backorder for months before it finally shipped. And, despite having to wait so long for it, I didn't get around to playing with it immediately. Finally, last week, faced with a solo drive to Dayton, I decided it was time to get it working.

The first thing I discovered was that I'd been right to worry about the fit. Plugged directly into the dashboard, it was going to cause major interference with the gearshift. Not good.

So I got out the extension adapter, and started playing with it. It didn't bend in as many places and directions as I would have liked. Finally I decided that this was about as good as it would get.

I wasn't real happy with it. It looked dorky. And it also looked like it was shouting "Hey, steal me!" to anyone who walked past the parked car. I suppose this wouldn't be an issue for hardcore iPodders, who would never leave their iPod behind, but I didn't intend to carry the damn thing everywhere I went. But I guessed I could live with it on long trips.

It didn't take long to find another problem with this configuration. It was fairly top-heavy, and the plug didn't fit tight enough to keep it from rotating. So, very soon, it ended up in this position, once again causing shifting issues.

Resigned to the idea that I would just have to knock it out of the way occasionally, and I wouldn't need to shift often on the highway, I headed north. And it didn't take long to find out why the FM transmission technique was a bad idea.

It requires an "empty" frequency. You tune the stereo to a frequency that receives only static, then tune the transmitter to transmit on that frequency, et voila!. Life is good, until your travels take you within the range of a commercial station which is using that frequency that was empty back home.

It's not a total disaster. Harmony can once again be restored by seeking out another static frequency on the radio, and retuning the transmitter. But that's a minor pain. I had to do that twice in a two-hour trip. I might as well be changing CDs every hour. This thing was supposed to give me hassle-free uninterrupted music.

And, speaking of hassle-free-not, the power interface was yet another headache for everyday use. Although I like having tunes while I drive, I don't like constantly messing with the audio gear. I prefer to set it and forget it; have it turn on and off with the ignition and ignore it otherwise. I frequently leave the same CD in the player for weeks because I'm too lazy to change it.

Well, this device isn't going to turn on/off that easily. The lighter is fed from the accessory feed, which is good. Power to the RoadTrip turns on/off with the key, which is what I wanted. But the way it reacts to that is not what I wanted.

After the power is cut, when it turns back on, the RoadTrip does not power up by itself. It has to be turned back on manually. And cutting power to the RoadTrip does not shut off the iPod. It keeps playing silently on its own battery until it's turned off (or its battery runs down if I forget to turn it off). And then after starting the car and turning on the RoadTrip, I have to turn the iPod back on. Again, probably not an issue for iPodders who take it with them when they leave the car, but it doesn't quite fit the way I would like to use it.

HTC Touch

Although their executives deny it vehemently, our opinion is that the HTC Touch was rushed to market in our part of the world to take advantage of the iPhone fever that is currently sweeping the globe. Of course, it will be a while longer before the iPhone shows up in this part of the world, and dollars gets you doughnuts that a clone from China or Taiwan will hit the streets of KL long before any iPhone shows up.

Exterior

On its own, the Touch doesn¡¦t really look like much when it comes out of the box, or a crumpled paper envelope in our case. There was no manual, which makes a terribly difficult piece of hardware even harder to use.

The rubberised shell made the rather slim Touch stick to the hands. We think that is good because a slippery surface would have caused the device to slip out of the user¡¦s hands a lot owing to its rather small size.

Every single review we could find made disparaging remarks about the slot for the SIM and data card. We can do no different. This is absolutely the worst example of a SIM card slot that I have ever seen in a phone, and I have seen plenty. It is difficult to pry open and the joint is made out of cheap transparent rubber. That demeans what is otherwise a nice device, and I would not pay money for this kind of slipshod engineering.

The camera shortcut on the right side of the phone does not activate the camera, but goes to the Comm Manager application instead. The USB port is at the bottom of the phone, and the lanyard is supposed to be fixed to the bottom left of the device.

Buttons/Screen
There are no buttons other than the pick-up and end-call buttons at the bottom of the screen. Of course, there are a couple of shortcut buttons around the side of the phone, but for all practical purposes, the HTC Touch is a completely touchscreen device.

We found that the stylus was a bit too short to be comfortable, but was acceptable for general usage. The screen was not very sensitive at the corners but did just fine in the centre of the screen. One more thing to note is that the TouchFlo system does not work in landscape mode.

Software/Messaging
The controls are focused primarily on the TouchFlo system that reads a finger being tapped on or dragged across the screen. Movement in different directions bring up different parts of the menu. This menu looks like the ¡¥cube¡¦ menu of an Apple or Linux interface in that it rotates like having a solitary die on the screen.

Other than that, the interface is unique and displays a large clock on its home screen. This is different from the usual Windows Mobile desktop and is quite a pleasant change from the norm.

The on-screen keyboard is much too small and entering text was a bit difficult as you had to hunt and peck for the character that you wanted. However, the number pad for dialling phone numbers was of a good size and pretty easy to use.

PIM
MS Office is now Office Mobile on the Start menu, and selecting this brings up a window that displays Excel Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile and Word Mobile on the screen. These are the mobile counterparts for similarly-named products for regular Windows OS PCs.

Of course, the Calculator, Notes and Calendar applications are built into the OS already. This is boilerplate Windows OS, and not something new to talk about. Chances are, you won¡¦t be making much data entry into the Touch because of the rather small onscreen keyboard.

Camera/Video
The 2.0 megapixel camera is capable of 8x digital zoom, and there are the various resolution settings as usual. However, the on-screen controls were not sensitive and this would be a handicap when you need to shoot a quick picture.

The viewfinder was slow to respond to changes in the direction the lens was pointed in. All in, there is little to suggest that cameras are anything but afterthoughts in most of the Windows Mobile Phones that we have looked at thus far.

There is a self-image mirror next to the camera lens. There is no flash light but there is a setting for night shots. The usual plethora of effects settings is also available for the digital camera and the video.

Multimedia/Voice
Apparently, the processor used is a 201 MHz TI OMAP processor. There is 128 MB of ROM and 64 MB of RAM. Video playback is rather jerky, and music playback drains the batteries real fast.

There is a voice recorder in the program menu that you can use to record your own notes. You can even record your own sounds that you want to use as the ringtone.

Connectivity
The HTC Touch supports Bluetooth, but not infrared. likewise, it has Wi-Fi support built in, but does not have 3G capabilities.

As we mentioned earlier, the card slot is really bad and you would not want to be prying this open all the time to exchange SIM or memory cards. Chances are, you will be transferring most of your data in and out of the Touch with the USB cable which is a lot easier to access at the bottom of the Touch.

Games
Windows phones have two default games, which are BubbleBreaker and Solitaire. This hasn¡¦t changed in years, and much as it bores me to write this, it must be even more excruciating for you to read about it. Let¡¦s spare each other the agony.

LG Prada (KE850)

One such model is the LG Prada (KE850), which is a collaboration between the famous Italian fashion label and the South Korean electronics powerhouse.

As expected from such an alliance, the end-result is one beautiful and elegant phone – everything about the KE850's high-gloss black piano finish and slim candybar housing just exudes class.

Measuring just slightly bigger than an ATM card, the phone's build quality is excellent and feels solid in the palms of my hands.

Its 3in touchscreen display dominates the phone's front portion. There is a line of three small function buttons for pick up, hang up and cancel underneath the screen.

On both sides, you will find keys to access the camera, MP3 player lock and volume control. It also comes with a dedicated lock button to prevent users from activating the touchscreen accidentally.

While the piano black finish looks great, the glossy material used is prone to smudges and needs to be regularly cleaned to keep its appeal.

Touch me

Despite its large touchscreen display, the LG Prada is neither a PDA phone nor a smartphone. It is actually just a standard mobile phone that offers a different approach to user navigation.

The phone comes with a few themes built-in, including two that offer animated Koi fish and butterflies on the phone's home screen.

What's interesting is that each of these animated characters would swim or fly towards where you are tapping on the display. A novelty feature for sure, but it never failed to impress my friends and curious onlookers.

Unlike a PDA, there is no stylus provided so you need to use your fingers. Usage is fairly simple – you just have use your finger to scroll and tap on the icon to open an application.

For dialling purposes, you tap on the phone's virtual keypad.

It is quite responsive but there are some trade offs – there is no tactile feedback and you will also need to look at the virtual keypad often when texting as there is no "elevated" key 5 to guide you to the location of the numbers or alphabets.

Those with slender fingers won't have much problem with the touch interface especially when it comes to typing messages. But it gets tricky for those with fatter digits as they will need to use their fingertips to tap on the right spot.

Once your call gets connected, the virtual keypad disappears and is replaced by the call status screen. You cannot recall the virtual keypad while a call is in progress.

Although this does not affect your call but in some scenarios it is imperative to have the virtual keypad back.

For instance, I couldn't get through to my prepaid service's automated customer centre just because I couldn't key in the preferred language options when prompted.

In another situation, I had to get a telephone receptionist to patch me through to a person at the office even though I know his extension number.

Whether this is an honest mistake on the manufacturer's part or due to other reasons, LG definitely needs to rectify this problem ASAP.

Shoot me

Fortunately there is plenty to look forward to in this phone especially in the multimedia department.

For starters, the phone has a video player that supports MPEG4 and H.263 formats, a music player that plays MP3 and AAC files, as well as a built-in FM radio and a voice recorder.

It also supports Bluetooth stereo headphones for wireless listening pleasure.

Video playback looks good on this device and its music player also has respectable sound quality.

However, the latter comes with a very limited functionality – repeat, shuffle and only two skin options (white or black).

The LG Prada also doubles up as a 2-megapixel shooter, with a Schneider Kreuznach lens, an autofocus system and a LED photo light.

Still and video images taken under bright sunlight turned out quite good. In dimly lit environments, however, the picture quality drops significantly as expected.

In terms of productivity applications, there is a document viewer that supports Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat files.

The documents are automatically resized to the screen's width and are generally readable but you do have to squint your eyes a little.

The phone has a meagre 8MB of built-in memory but if you need to store more files, it has a MicroSD slot with a 256MB card included.

As expected, the large screen drains a lot of power and the battery lasted for two days with regular usage before it needed a recharge.

Final words

The LG Prada takes the cake for being one of the priciest "standard" phones around but I suppose that's the price to pay for exclusivity.

While it does have some really fun-to-use functions, there are some blips such as the disappearing virtual keypad, texting problems for those with large fingers and limited music functionalities.

These drawbacks aside, the phone's design is cutting-edge and hip, and is sure to turn heads whenever you take it out in public.

Recommended for fashion-conscious users with cash to burn.

Sony Ericsson P1i

Sony Ericsson's P-series of business phones have long been popular in many parts of the world, though not particularly so in North America. The devices have always combined some of the best modern day technology that was available into a device that, while big, was still no larger than a typical PDA. The P1, Sony Ericsson's new flagship workhorse, is the first P-series device to cram all of that raw capability into a form factor that is only slightly larger than a typical candy bar phone.

Physical Aspects

Even though it carries a 'P' designation, the new Sony Ericsson P1 shares far more of its physical design with the Sony Ericsson M600 than it does with other P-series devices like the P990. In general, the P1 can be thought of as an M600 that was given an improved keyboard, WiFi, and an auto-focus camera on the back. Indeed, the P1's 106mm x 55mm x 17mm (4.1" x 2.2" x .7") dimensions and 129g (4.5oz) weight make it a very pocketable device in spite of its capabilities.

The front of the P1 consists solely of the 2.6" TFT display and the QWERTY keyboard. The display is reasonably bright and crisp, but seems to lack some of the visual pop that I've seen on many other recent QVGA (240x320 pixel) displays. The surface of the display sits a few millimeters below the face of the phone, as is the case with 95% of the touchscreen devices on the market today. This makes it more difficult to clean than devices such as the HTC Touch and Sony Ericsson's own W960, which use flush mounted displays. This sunken nature of the display is all the more obvious to users because of the P1's lack of hardware softkeys. Instead, the P1's Symbian OS and UIQ 3 user interface rely solely on on-screen softkeys along the bottom of the display. Other on-screen controls are mostly intended to be accessed via the scroll wheel or the included stylus The stylus itself is very thin, which some people dislike. It is, however, a respectable 95mm (3.75") in length.

The QWERTY keyboard on the P1 is unusual in that the right and left edge of each convex shaped key serves a different purpose. As such, the 'A' and 'S' letters are on the same key instead of on neighboring keys. The shift key located in the bottom left corner of the keypad works as one would expect, and the ALT key, in the lower right hand corner of the keypad, is used for accessing the numeric keypad digits and symbols. A pair of arrow keys straddle the space bar, and they offer a bit of help when navigating the P1 without using the stylus. The number keys, when used with the ALT key (which can be locked on), work like they do on regular phones in that you don't have to worry about the edges, you just press the key. The design is compact, but far from ideal. A year ago when I reviewed the M600, I adapted to its keyboard and learned to live with it. But now, after having been spoiled by many devices with fine QWERTY keyboards, I am less inclined to embrace it. Those extra few millimeters of width offered by the keyboards on devices like the Motorola Q or Palm Treos make a big difference. The P1's keyboard is certainly passable for those that value a compact form factor over ease, and speed, of use - but it is not one that I am in love with. In any event, the keyboard is faster and easier to use than the touchscreen based virtual keyboard or handwriting recognition system.

While the P1's aforementioned scroll-wheel is a fine example of how to build a scroll-wheel, I still lament the lack of a joystick or d-pad on the P1 (as I did with the M600). Just as the 4-way navigation on the BlackBerry Pearl allowed me to finally appreciate the BlackBerry UI, the lack of such a 4-way directional control on the P1 makes me resent having to scroll so much when making edits to a message or simply navigating a grid of menu icons. It slows me down too much, though not as much as whipping out a stylus would. Located directly below the scroll-wheel on the left edge of the P1 is a dedicated back button, a button that will be used very often by any P1 owner. A user configurable application key that defaults to the message inbox is located on the right edge of the P1, above the Memory Stick Micro card slot and the camera shutter button.

The power key is located on the top of the device, near the stylus silo. I like how the P1 vibrates briefly when it powers up, letting the user know that they can release the key. A fast port connector and a message/charging status LED are located on the bottom of the P1. The fast port is used for charging (with or without the included dock), attaching headsets, and for USB connections. The fact that the P1 can charge via USB is nice, but the fact that one must use a special fast port to USB cable reduces the benefits of USB charging a bit. A standard mini-USB or micro-USB connector would have suited me far better. The primary 3.2 megapixel camera is located on the back of the P1. While there is a protective glass window over the camera's lens, there is no plastic shutter to protect the glass from being scratched. It is recessed a bit, though, which probably offers adequate protection. A low-resolution, secondary camera for video calls is located on the front of the device, above the display.

In terms of build quality, the P1 is rock solid. It feels like it would be able to survive some moderate abuse, and I am pleased with the choice of finishes on the device in general. The P1 stays reasonably clean looking, even after a lot of use. The display, as I mentioned before, can be hard to clean (dust gathers in the corners), but otherwise I have no complaints. The P1's design is very subdued and tasteful, it is just that some real practical compromises have been made in order to keep the form factor so compact.

Core Functions

While the Sony Ericsson P1's jittery signal strength gauge might suggest otherwise, the P1 seems to do a pretty fine job of holding onto a weak GSM signal. In particularly bad signal areas I experienced some breaking up of the audio, but the P1 didn't drop any calls while in the US or Europe, and it never stated that I couldn't make a GPRS data connection when I tried to pick up email or browse the web. When the signal was reasonable, the audio quality of calls on the P1 followed suit. The speakerphone function performed decently as long as the P1 user spoke clearly and with a fair amount of volume. Our P1 managed almost exactly 8 hours of talk time in our test on T-Mobile's 1900MHz GSM network (the P1 also supports the 900 and 1800MHz GSM bands, as well as UMTS on 2100MHz). Sony Ericsson rates the P1 as being capable of over 2 weeks of standby time, which I find to be optimistic. But with that said, the P1 will sit quietly and wait for a call for a very, very long time before the battery is fully drained. As long as there are no active data connections due to push email or similar applications.
The contacts system on the P1 is adequate. It stores vast amounts of information about a contact in a well organized manner by making good use of tabs. From the contact screen it is very convenient to send a message or to place a call. My gripe with the system as a whole has to do with the searching mechanism. There is no quick search function from the standby screen or even from the phone application. Searches can only be initiated from inside the contacts app, and even then searches can only be made against the first or the last name of a contact, depending on how the device is configured. I find this to be wholly inadequate.

The P1 has no real profiles system, but simply an option to put the phone into silent mode. Silent mode can be quickly toggled on the standby screen by long-pressing the # key on the keyboard or by accessing the function from the More menu. The various ringtones for things such as calls, email, or text messages can all be individually configured. The vibration alarm can be configured for each different alert type as well, being on all the time, on only when the phone is in silent mode, or off completely. In spite of how I set the device, though, inbound Exchange Activesync emails always caused an alert tone to be triggered, even though email alerts were set to vibrate only.

Voice dialing on the P1 seems to only be accessible when the device is used with a headset of some sort. The P1 uses an old fashioned voice tag based voice dialing system that requires a voice tag to be recorded for each number (not contact) that the user wishes to access. I was unable to record a voice tag with a Bluetooth headset (it failed to hear anything), but I was able to use the headset once the tags has been recorded. A better option for many might be the P1's speed contacts application, which can be assigned to one of the shortcut positions at the bottom of the standby screen. Those positions can also be set directly as a contact, bypassing the speed contacts application completely.

A device such as the P1 should really excel when it comes to messaging, but my experience has been less than satisfactory. While the P1 has built-in support for Exchange ActiveSync for over the air synchronization of contacts, appointments, and email, the included RoadSync software that handles the task did not perform well. 3 times in the past week the application silently disabled the Direct Push connection due to some sort of connection error. Only when the user loads the app will they see a message noting this, meaning that you could go for hours thinking that you simply received no email. On top of that, it doesn't support folders or include support for peak vs. off-peak times. As such, Direct Push is either on all the time, wasting battery power while you sleep, or it is off.

The P1 performed hardly better with my IMAP email account. The application was very, very slow and unresponsive at times (perhaps owing to the number of messages in my inbox), and both the IMAP account and the ActiveSync account showed up in the Messaging application as if they had no inbox. The outbox, drafts, and sent folders were accessible, but not the inbox. The inboxes could only be accessed by selecting the mailbox from the standby screen's Today! widget. The regular SMS/MMS inbox didn't have that problem, and showed up as expected. Instead, the SMS/MMS inbox failed on any attempt to delete a message, offering me nothing more than a "bad request" message in a popup window. The P1 also has support for RIM's BlackBerry Connect push system, but I did not have the opportunity to test it.

The tri-band GSM (900/1800/1900MHz) and UMTS 2100MHz P1 supports only slow GPRS data on GSM networks and basic WCDMA data rates on European 3G networks. The P1 lacks the faster EDGE and HSDPA data rates that many networks are capable of. We didn't test the UMTS data rates of the P1, but the GPRS connection on T-Mobile USA's network averaged about 37Kbps. The P1's WiFi support was, of course, faster, coming in at about 191Kbps. For comparison, the HTC Mogul for Sprint managed 1260Kbps speeds over WiFi, roughly 6 times faster than those of the P1. On top of that, I found the P1's data system to be particularly complicated to configure and manage. The system requires different options and tasks to be accomplished in many different applets, including the WiFi app, the Connection manager, and the Internet accounts screen. At least it supports connection grouping, so that the P1 can be setup to look for your home WiFi account before accessing the GPRS network. The thing is, I ran into many problems with WiFi on the P1 that, so far, Sony Ericsson's engineers have been unable to explain. My WEP secured home network could only be used when the P1's WiFi system had the power-saving mode disabled, and the WPA secured network at the house in Ireland where I was vacationing could not be used at all. I had no problems with public, unsecured networks, though. Bluetooth and USB connectivity gave me no troubles on the P1.

Multimedia / Applications

As has long been the case with Sony Ericsson's P-series of devices, the P1 has a reasonable suite of supported multimedia functions. The auto-focus, 3.2 megapixel camera is a good start. The camera takes pretty reasonable photos in general, has a strong flash, and has a user interface that is pretty intuitive. The auto-focus system is a bit hard to control at times, though, and your intended subject is not always in focus. This problem is due, at least in part, to the fact that there is no focus target in the viewfinder screen. Users merely compose the photo, press the shutter button in half way, and the P1 reports that focus has been locked - without showing you what it has locked focus on. The white balance system in the camera is also a bit out of sync with the real world. Most of the time the photos come out well enough, but the camera tends to always be at least a bit off, even with the manual settings. It is still overall a reasonable camera, it just isn't as good as we have come to expect from Sony Ericsson. It does record nice quality QVGA resolution video clips, though, and an included video player application can play streaming videos in many formats, including Real and H.263 and H.264.

The P1 fared somewhat better when it came to music playback. While the P1 ships with Sony Ericsson's Disc2Phone music software for personal computers, I simply used Microsoft's Windows Media Player to sync over a few albums worth of music. The phone organizes the music by artist, album, song, and playlists automatically. While I felt that the P1 lacked maximum volume when used with my Bluetooth A2DP stereo Motorola S9 headphones, the P1's MegaBass equalizer setting performed well, compensating for the S9's generally weak bass response. When the music player is running, it can be quickly accessed by clicking on the current track name that is listed on the P1's standby screen. The P1 doesn't provide as rich of a music experience as Sony Ericsson's Walkman branded handsets, but it performs quite well in general. It could certainly do with a regular 3.5mm stereo headphone jack, too. The somewhat related Sound Recorder application allows users to record voice memos, as expected, but also serves double duty as a song identifier, using the Track ID service that is found on many other Sony Ericsson handsets.

The P1 uses the popular Opera v8.65 browser for web tasks. I found the browser to work well for most mobile web tasks, though I don't find it to be nearly as capable as the Safari based browsers offered by Apple and Nokia. The browser supports use in both landscape and portrait modes, and also offers a useful zoom setting that let's users scale pages to the size that suits them best. I also like that the screen can be scrolled with a stylus or finger dragging motion instead of forcing the use of the scroll bar. I am not a fan, however, of the browser's menu organization, nor of the amount of screen real estate wasted by the UIQ controls at the top and bottom of the screen.

The P1, as a smartphone, has all of the expected personal information management type applications: calendar, task list, notes, calculator, and unit converter. The calendar app worked very well, but would have been easier to use if the keyboard's left and right arrow keys could be used to switch months and weeks in the current view. As is, a lot of scroll-wheel spinning is required to navigate if the user wants to avoid pulling out the stylus. The other applications also worked well, in general.

The included QuickOffice suite of apps lets the P1 user create and edit Microsoft Office compatible documents. Using them for real editing work requires the stylus since there is no joystick or d-pad that can be used for normal 4-way navigation. The P1 also includes the Pdf+ document viewer and a business card scanner. I was very impressed by the card scanner. It makes great use of the macro focusing abilities of the P1's camera. The OCR processing of the cards I tested was very, very accurate, and the information is automatically placed into a new contact record that the user can edit and save.

Other applications of note on the P1 include a solid RSS news feed reader, a file manager, an FM radio (requires use of the included wired headset), and a couple of games. All of these programs and data can be stored either in the P1's 159MB of available internal storage, or on the included 512MB Memory Stick Micro (M2) card. Sony Ericsson's PC Suite for Windows based computers is also included, and it allows users to move media files around and synchronize their P1 with programs such as Microsoft Outlook.

LG Chocolate 3G (KU800)

After having sold a reported 4 million units of the original Chocolate phone (KG800) worldwide, it didn't come as a surprise when LG announced it was introducing a 3G version of its popular slider. Called the Chocolate 3G (KU800), the new handset also features several upgrades over its predecessor, among them a higher-resolution 2-megapixel camera and expandable memory card slot.

Upside:
One of the key reasons for the success of the original Chocolate lay with its clean yet sexy design, which the Korean company has retained in the 3G edition. Thus like its predecessor, the new KU800 comes in a sleek slider form factor complete with by now familiar glossy piano black finish and buttonless touchpad navigation keys. Interestingly, the new Chocolate 3G is a mite smaller, though it's also become marginally thicker and heavier.
There are some distinct cosmetic differences between the KG800 and the new KU800. For starters, the primary camera is now at the rear rather than hidden within the sliding section. This being 3G, a second VGA camera sits beside the phone speaker for 3G video calls. The microSD card slot on the left edge is certainly a welcomed addition as the 128MB onboard memory on its predecessor was simply insufficient for storing images and music. The irony is that the use of the microSD card is capped at 1GB for the phone. Music lovers who want to carry more MP3s on the Chocolate or users who aim to store videos may chafe at this limitation.

Battery capacity has been increased from 800mAh to 1,000mAh, probably to handle the increased power load due to added features such as 3G, video calls and microSD card slot.

Downside:
While 3G is a useful feature to have, particularly if you plan to travel to Korea and Japan, we wonder if LG should have gone with the faster HSDPA standard instead, considering that rival Samsung has already introduced several new models with the new technology. There's also the omission of an FM tuner and A2DP Bluetooth stereo support which are increasingly standard features on handsets these days.

Our biggest gripe, though, has to lie with the touchpad navigation controls. In our hands-on with the KU800, these were still not as easy to use or intuitive as regular buttons.

Outlook:
LG's 3G makeover will doubtless appeal to the fashion-conscious set, though time will tell if the KU800 has sufficient weapons in its arsenal to repeat the success of the older KG800. The Chocolate 3G is slated to ship in February for about S$638 (US$405.90) without contract.

Well, you've guessed it; it's the Sony Ericsson W710, the latest Walkman mobile phone from Sony Ericsson. The clamshell sports a 2 megapixel camera, a Memory Stick Micro memory card slot, a FM radio, and a set of nice fitness applications to store your results and to calculate how many calories you have burned on the track that day. It's a highly attractive combination that makes the first steps for Sony Ericsson on the mobile sports track. We'll see how it keeps up there.

Sony Ericsson W710 is one of those rare sport-oriented mobiles that have begun to emerge on the market recently. They seem to have a market niche of their own and though they are few in numbers, they are beginning to gain popularity. Several manufacturers already have recognized the need for those kinds of mobile phones. The truth is that as we begin to see the mobile phone as an indispensable part of our everyday lives, it would develop more and more to cover a broader part of our everyday technological needs.

When we are speaking of sports, the other recent phone that first comes to mind is most definitely the Nokia 5500 Sport. But we won't compare the two phones as we don't perceive them as direct competitors. First, Nokia 5500 has a dust and splash resistant body, and furthermore it is based on the Symbian OS and thus it offers more versatile and expandable software capabilities. In the same time, it costs more. So they are not really direct competitors since they are targeted at different customer groups.

The first sport-oriented handsets in fact were the ones with a body with increased resistance to moisture and dust. This is not the case with Sony Ericsson W710 although it features some sporty design solutions.

As it happens often in the mobile world, the W710 in fact has a twin - it is the Sony Ericsson Z710. Sony Ericsson tends to keep up their budget-oriented Z-series of clamshells and Sony Ericsson Z710 is one of its latest additions. The two handsets are practically identical except for the added Walkman features to the W710 such as the MegaBass equalizer preset and the TrackID function, as well as the sports features such as the pedometer and calories counter.

The Sony Ericsson W710 would be offered in two color combinations - a grey/white one and a violet/white one. The one we got to test was the grey/white one.

The retail package should include a 512MB Memory Stick Micro card, a sports Sony Ericsson HPM-65 stereo headset, a sports belt/armband clip, an armband and a USB data cable card but as we have always said - the contents of the retail package are market and country dependant.
Sporty all around

Seeing W710 for the first time left us with an impression of cheap white plastic combined with unpretentious grey rubber - nothing fancy, really. Opening the clamshell, made things better, since the white plastic seemed glossy from the inside of the clam, while the grey plastic covering the insides felt and looked nice.
When it comes to dimensions, well… There's nothing impressive in that department too. The W710 is a rather fatty fellow with a width of 24.5 mm - but despite the size, it still doesn't fit into the heavyweight category with its 101 g which is a somewhat normal weight these days.

The front of the Sony Ericsson W710 is dominated by the large monochrome external display which can fit a lot of information for the user. The Walkman logo sits right beneath it and the grey rubber on both sides accommodates the dedicated music keys.
In fact, speaking of those side music keys they tend to resemble a lot the ones incorporated into the Nokia 5300 Xpress Music. Maybe because of the similar color combination (white/grey) we just couldn't help the feeling that these two are as if made by one and the same designer team.

A look at the left side reveals that they are not the only side keys though. There we also see a dual volume key and the camera shortcut key. Placing the camera key on the left side hinted us from the very beginning that the camera is not made to shoot in landscape mode.

An interesting element is the one under the side music keys - the one designated with the Memory Stick Micro logo. Although it resembled a memory card slot cap a lot it turned out it's a dummy cap after all and it only designates where the memory card is located. To gain access to it you have to remove the back cover.
Speaking of a camera, this one is located on the usual place for all clamshells - in the upper portion of the external cover.
The right side of the W710 incorporates only the Infrared port and a hardware keylock for the dedicated music keys. It's a nice feature and it does a good job in preventing unwanted press of those.
The Sony Ericsson doesn't have a dedicated standard audio jack. Instead it uses the proprietary Sony Ericsson Fast Port for connecting the charger, the headphones and the USB cable. Don't get disappointed though, you would still be able to use your favorite headphones with it since the headset supplied in the retail kit has a standard audio jack connector just for the purpose. The top of the W710 doesn't feature any keys at all but it does feature an important design element that we are so used to see in the Z-series line-up - an external loop antenna which can be used for strip fastening.

The back of the Sony Ericsson W710 is bare with the exception of the loudspeaker grill which is styled in orange. The cover is made of the same white pearl shiny plastic that we see when the clamshell is opened. As expected from a sports oriented mobile, the cover has a rather secure locking mechanism which is opened with a slide.

Beneath the cover we can see the standard Sony Ericsson BST-37 Li-Polymer battery with a capacity of 900 mAh. According to the manufacturer it should provide power for up to the impressive 350 hours of standby time and up to 10 hours of talk time. Unfortunately, we couldn't test the phone's battery life since we used the phone heavily during our tests and thus the battery life we experienced was not indicative for the real-life performance of the phone. Beneath the battery lies the SIM card bed which features the regular locking mechanism seen on almost all Sony Ericsson mobiles.
The Sony Ericsson W710 has a rather nice keypad that would suit the taste of every messaging fan. The navigation D-pad is precise enough while the alphanumeric keys have a rather positive feedback while typing. Beside the usual key arrangement, the keypad also features a dedicated Walkman key. The keypad has a dim orange backlighting which is unpleasantly uneven but does its job in the dark.

The Sony Ericsson K550 is a feature-rich cameraphone with an enjoyable 2 megapixel camera, nice imaging applications, FM radio and a memory card slot. And all that at a reasonable price that may attract your attention. Anyways, if we’ve managed to grab it, feel free to join us on a tour with the K800’s little brother.

The Cyber-shot revolution has done only good to the Sony Ericsson sales. It proved rather successful and that is the reason why the manufacturer naturally releases a more affordable cameraphone to the masses. Sony Ericsson continue their long line of bar phones which are either camera or music-oriented with the K550. The midrange K-series continuation comes again in a small shell with a tight fit waist. At only 14 mm thickness, it surely packs in some nice features. So let’s continue with our review, but bear in mind that in the case of Sony Ericsson the Cyber-shot logo does not necessarily mean great camera performance but enhanced imaging capabilities.

The Sony Ericsson K550 is going to be produced in two distinct versions. The first one is the K550i and the second one the K550im which is an i-mode version of the mobile and is the first i-mode phone by the manufacturer bearing that Cyber-shot logo. The test handset we received is in fact namely that i-mode version. It carries certain differences and as such those will be duly noted. Nevertheless, it gives us pretty much the full picture about the more widely-distributed would-be version – K550i.
An impressive start

Sony Ericsson K550 leaves nice impression at first sight. It measures 102 x 46 x 14 mm and weighs only 85 g. The handset design is styled with the new Sony Ericsson style – circular navigation keys and thin metallic alphanumeric keys. This is obviously the design that is going to reign in the Sony Ericsson camp this year as we see it on almost all their latest bar-shaped mobiles.

Above the 262K colors TFD display with a 176 x 220 pixels resolution there is only an in-call speaker grill and the Sony Ericsson brand name. The display itself has a silver rim all over which adds a certain stylishness to the design. Below the display there are the navigation keys which have a silver finish.
The left side of the device features a dual volume key and the regular Fast Port used for connecting the headset, the charger and the data cable. The port is indeed the regular one use by Sony Ericsson but is unusually positioned on the left side. In fact we saw that same solution in the Sony Ericsson W880. That is the same reason why the bottom side of the device is pretty bare.
The top side on the other hand accommodates an On/Off key and the Infrared port.
The right side of the device features a camera shutter key and a dual volume key which serves the double purpose of zooming in and out when taking pictures or shooting video. There are also two small sliders which in fact lock the battery cover.
Flipping the phone over reveals the active lens cover. Sliding it down activates the camera interface automatically. The active cover in fact covers not only the lens but also a self portrait mirror. Just beside the cover there are two powerful LEDs which serve the purpose of a photo flash as well as a flashlight when used with the Light application that is preinstalled in the phone.
Once you slide open the two sliders which lock the battery cover it is removed with an ease. This type of locking mechanism seems rather stable and secure.
Once the cover is removed, the battery and the memory card slot are revealed. The battery is a standard Sony Ericsson BST-33 Li-Polymer with a capacity of 950mAh. There is no official information about how long the battery is supposed to endure, but our impression is that Sony Ericsson K550 does nice in that department. With a moderate use the fully charged battery was capable of enduring at least 4 days. The same battery in fact is used in Sony Ericsson W850 and W880.
The SIM card bed is under the battery. It’s a regular Sony Ericsson one meaning that the SIM card is easy to slide in and hard to slide out.
Generally we are pretty pleased with the design and construction of the Sony Ericsson K550. It feels nice to touch and fits perfectly in your hand.

Apple iPhone

A day after Steve Jobs unveiled the Apple iPhone during his MacWorld keynote on Tuesday morning, I actually got my hands on one. For all of ten minutes. Ten minutes isn't much, but I can safely say that the iPhone is even more impressive than it appeared during the Jobs keyote. And that's saying something. On Wednesday afternoon, I had a brief meeting scheduled with Apple executives, and as I walked in, I expected no more than a quick Q&A session. I would ask a few pointed questions—and get a few vague answers. But, much to my surprise, as I sat down, they actually handed me a working iPhone and let me use it.

For the most, it was an absolute revelation. Seeing the device in action is one thing—but actually using it is another. Each application is impressive in its own right, from photo-management software to the Safari Web browser, but it's the overall touch-screen interface that takes the breath away. The only thing I had trouble using was the onscreen keyboard—it's obviously the sort of thing that takes some practice—but it was impressive nonetheless.

As Jobs showed off the iPhone on Tuesday morning, there was a collective gasp from the hundreds of Mac heads crammed into San Francisco's Moscone West convention hall. And then another. And then another. Yes, the Mac faithful are inclined to this sort of reverential behavior, but if you were in the room, you could tell how many people were genuinely amazed.

They were most amazed by the device's MultiTouch technology, which lets the user navigate the on-screen controls with nothing more than bare fingers. As Jobs demonstrated, it lets the user launch applications with a soft touch, scroll through Web pages, resize photos, even type via an onscreen keyboard. It's the sort thing that, once you've see it in action, you can't wait to try for yourself. Unfortunately, the iPhone won't ship until June, and even if you're on the floor at MacWorld, you can't actually handle the device. The best you can do is stare at one through glass case while a surly security guard looks on. Well, that's the best you can do unless you can swing a private meeting with Apple.

Though I only used the device for ten minutes, it was obvious that MultiTouch works pretty much as Jobs said it would. With a tap of the finger, I opened the photo management tool. With another, I opened a photo. With a swipe of the finger, I moved the photo back and forth. And by placing two fingers on the screen and moving them back and forth, I could zoom in and out. It was just as easily to scroll through a full size Web page—and zoom in or out. In much the same way, I could instantly browse and access songs, videos, contacts, and more (photos and videos looked good, but I didn't have ear phones, so I couldn't actually listen to songs). I could also switch the screen from portrait to landscape mode simply by turning the device on its side (though this only works if you swivel it the right way, and on the first try, I went the wrong way).

To test the on-screen keyboard, I tried typing an e-mail. At first, I typed with two hands—gripping the device on each side and taping a thumb on each end of the keyboard—but I was only about 50 percent accurate. Then I switched to hunting and pecking with a single index finger, and though this was (slightly) more accurate, it was much slower. My guess is that after some practice, you could get pretty efficient with two thumbs. But the keyboard is obviously something that takes some time to get used to. The rest of the interface requires no practice whatsoever.

With the last minute or so of my allotted time, I actually made a call. I phoned my editor, Sean Carroll, in our New York office. The sound quality was poor—"kinda fuzzy," Sean said, "not as good as a normal cell phone"—but it should be said that I was in an area of the Moscone Center when reception is less than ideal. The iPhone's exclusive wireless carrier is Cingular.

And then they took it away from me. I didn't have a chance to try Google Maps or the Apple Widgets or the visual voice mail. But it's the new interface that really caught the attention this week—and it's everything Jobs says it is.

LG VX8600

Craving a taste of Chocolate but waiting for a phone you could really flip over? Well, the LG VX8600 delivers Chocolate style in a flip-phone form factor, though its performance won't satisfy the most demanding mobile users. The VX8600 is a seriously good-looking phone, ready for business or a night out on the town. In fact, I'd say it looks as good as the lovely KRZR K1m, though its all-plastic body doesn't feel as expensive as the KRZR's metal-accented case. At a wider 3.9 by 1.9 by 0.6 inch and weighing 3.3 ounces, the phone has a bigger 2.2-inch screen and larger (if completely flat) keys that will appeal to people who think the K1m is too small and narrow.

Made of smooth black plastic with silver trim, the VX8600 looks lacquered. It attracts fingerprints, but so do many shiny objects. The outside of the phone has an unusually big, bright color screen and light-up, touch-sensitive music buttons that you activate by hitting one of the volume keys on the side. Maybe: Inside, the keys are a decent size. Their flat, black look is beautiful (though not so convenient for dialing without looking), and the 176-by-220 screen is large and bright. I also found the user interface quick and responsive. No doubt most people will be using the VX8600 primarily as a voice phone. Voice reception is good; the phone connected in our home basement. That puts it on a par with my Motorola E815 test unit. Sound quality was fine, too, much like that of the LG VX8300 and the Chocolate (LG VX8500). The phone was good at handling wind noise; transmissions sounded clear; and it connected without a problem to Plantronics Bluetooth headsets. Voice dialing is the excellent no-training VoiceSignal system, though initial prompts can get can sometimes get cut off? when transferring calls over to Bluetooth. The speakerphone was extremely quiet. Battery life, at 3 hours 44 minutes, was decent but not outstanding.

I kept running into one major annoyance: a firmware bug that sometimes cut off EV-DO data reception. Though it happened only in one location, it was repeatable; it didn't occur on a Motorola E815 in the same location; and it caused seemingly random numbers to pop up on my test screens. The bug frequently locked me out of V Cast Music, too, since that requires EV-DO service. Nobody else on the Internet seems to be reporting this bug, soperhapsit's restricted to a small batch of VX8600s.

The 1.3-megapixel camera takes shots quickly, with a 0.3-second delay. But I wasn't thrilled with the picture quality: I saw pink or blue casts on some pictures, and indoor photos tended to be blurry. The phone records 176-by-144, 15-frame-per-second videos of average quality. You can store pictures and music in the 24MB of onboard memory or on a microSD card. My phone had trouble seeing a SanDisk 2GB microSD card I used, so you're probably better off sticking to 1GB cards.

The VX8600 has the same V Cast Video, VZ Navigator GPS, and V Cast Music capabilities as most midrange and high-end Verizon phones nowadays. Video plays in full screen, though it looks rather blocky. Music syncs with Windows Media Player using a $30 accessory kit, and you can play music over wired or Bluetooth headphones. The phone comes with a 2.5mm headset adapter for its oddball headset jack, but you'll need to buy an additional third-party adapter for $15 if you want to use 3.5mm music player headphones. Sadly, you can't play music in the background while you're doing other things with the phone. Music is decently loud, however, through the single speaker on the outside of the flip, though it sounds a bit like an old AM radio.

Verizon seems to have lifted its former policy of locking down Bluetooth; like the VX9900, the VX8600 lets you send and receive files over Bluetooth and use the phone as a modem on Verizon's EV-DO network. I managed to connect the VX8600 to both a Mac and a PC for file transfer and modem use.

To some extent, the VX8600 suffers from the same flaws as the Motorola KRZR K1m: a great design, but lukewarm performance when you go beyond simple voice calling. The VX8600 costs $70 less, though, so I recommend this phone over Motorola's model if you're looking for the sleekest thing on Verizon today. Less-fashion-oriented voice callers may want to look into the LG VX8300 instead, which has very similar features at a much lower price.

Sony Ericsson W880 Finally Announced

After releasing teaser images at CES last month, Sony Ericsson has today officially announced the new W880 Walkman phone from an event in London. We now know the full specifications of this ultra-thin device, and the W880 certainly does not disappoint.

Measuring up at just 9.4mm (0.37") thin, the Sony Ericsson W880 packs a punch in its brushed stainless steel finish, available in either Steel Silver or Flame Black color schemes. With UMTS 2100MHz and GSM 900/1800/1900MHz compatibility, along with Bluetooth v2.0 (with A2DP) and USB Mass Storage support, the W880 is very capable on the data front. A full HTML compliant browser with support for RSS feeds works a treat over the high-speed data options.Of course, the true attraction for the Sony Ericsson W880 is the media capability it hides in its attractive shell. Coming packaged with a 1GB Memory Stick Micro (M2) memory card and including the Walkman Player 2.0, the W880 is ready for music. Up to 18 hours of music listening time can be achieved with a single charge of the battery, and a flight mode is included to allow you to use the phone's Walkman capabilities in areas where phone use is prohibited. A 2.0 megapixel camera also somehow finds its way into the handset, as does a front-facing camera for video calling. A QVGA (240x320 pixel) resolution 1.8" display, capable of showing up to 262k colors, provides a window to the handset's functionality.

Both color variations of the thin Sony Ericsson W880 will be available in select markets before the end of Q1 2007.

Sony Ericsson Launches J110 and J120 Entry-Level Handsets

Today Sony Ericsson announced two additions to their entry-level J series of handsets. The new J110 and J120 are virtually identical except for the slightly more upscale J120 having a built-in FM radio and support for only 900/1800MHz GSM networks, while the less expensive J110 is available in both 900/1800MHz and 850/1900MHz GSM versions.Both devices have capacity for up to 200 contacts and 100 SMS messages in their built-in memory, and sport 16 voice polyphonic sound systems. Inorder to keep things simple for novices, the J110 and J120 both make use of a very simple user interface where one menu option icon appears on the screen at a time, similar to the way old Nokia Series 40 devices used to work. The system is somewhat necessary since the J110 and J120 handsets use a fairly low resolution 96x64 pixel, 65k color CSTN display.

Other features include an alarm, a calculator, and a simple reminder system. Both devices measure up at just under 17mm thick and should be good for up to 9 hours of talk time or up to 16 days of standby time, according to Sony Ericsson.

The J120 will be available in a night black color scheme, and the J110 will be available in precious purple, smooth grey, and soft cream color schemes when the devices ship in Q2 of this year. Sony Ericsson did not reveal any pricing information.

Sony calls on its Walkman roots to create this impressive cell phone/music player hybrid.

While it's no iPod, Sony Ericsson's W810 does a more-than-adequate job as both a cell phone and a multimedia player.

The W810 is a candy bar-style standard cell phone, and at first glance its dimensions of 3.9 by 1.8 by 0.8 inches make it look somewhat boxy. It works well in light use, offering adequate voice quality and volume, but it can be uncomfortable during long conversations. It offers impressive talk-time battery life, as it lasted 10 hours in our lab tests (the maximum amount of time we test).The W810 is the latest addition to Sony Ericsson's Walkman line of phones, and its impressive roots are on display--its music and multimedia features, including an FM radio, really set it apart. When you start up the phone, you're given the choice between launching just the Walkman functions or all of the phone's features. The W810 also automatically pauses songs when you receive an incoming call, and resumes them when you hang up.

The W810 comes with its own PC software for transferring songs onto the included 512MB Memory Stick Duo card. The software is simple to use, though unfortunately it does not let you create playlists on your PC--you can do that on the phone, but it isn't as easy as it could be. A 2-megapixel camera and Memory Stick Duo slot round out the features.

I have one minor complaint about the W810, regarding its navigation controls. Sony packs a lot of features--including the music player controls--into a small space. The controls are tiny, and the limited real estate leaves no room for dedicated send and end phone buttons. I adjusted to the controls quickly, and I was able to scroll through my music collection in no time, but the device's layout left me longing for the minimalist look of my iPod.

The W810 doesn't come cheap; an unlocked handset will cost you $500. (We tested a handset from Cingular; the carrier is expected to offer the phone by September for the same price.) But if you're in the market for a cell phone that doubles as a digital music player, the W810 is worth a look.
